A source close to Barney’s told the New York Daily News sales results of Jay-Z’s collaboration with the luxury retailer which totaled over $1 million. Jay-Z’s Barney’s collab was subject to hypocritical controversy after detectives detained two young African American customers who legally purchased products from the store.
I’d rather not dwell into the annoying bipartisan-like rhetoric that pits black folks on one side saying they should boycott Barney’s, and those on the other end purchasing the expensive collection in heart of it being charitable. Ultimately I think it’s lunacy to believe that boycotting the establishment is more effective than black people shopping amongst themselves to empower their wealth. After all, any premeditated bias that underestimates the accountability of any black individual’s ability to purchase products at these designer stores are a result of the very real economic disparity we collectively face. Simply put, we’ve been having the wrong conversation all along; but it is best saved for another article.
Jay-Z x Barney’s offered pieces ranging from $700 Don C snakeskin SnapBacks to $58k Rick Owens croc skin jackets; about 17 of those sold would put Jay at the 1 mil mark.
100% of the profits made from this collection will fund the Sean Carter foundation which pays for underprivileged kids college education.
